The sandwich buffet and rubber chicken circuit for Lions Club, Optimists, and assorted other service groups is excellent. One way to put yourself on this circuit is to register with your university’s speakers bureau if it has one. Schoolteachers also look for specialists to speak to their classes. If you have a local anthropology or natural history museum, you might inquire whether it needs docents or tour guides. This role can get monotonous after your fifteenth tour, but it will give your a chance to get comfortable in front of different sorts of groups and used to answering insightful and inane questions.

Giving these talks gives you an early start in returning something of our profession to the general public. The situation is not too difficult, and audiences truly are grateful to you. Speaking to the public or your peers is an important part of what an archaeologist does, but something that rarely comes automatically to anyone. To become a proficient speaker requires preparation and lots of practice.
